The response of cells to chemical and mechanical stimuli is well known and the signaling pathways are reasonably well understood. Cells also respond to electric fields, however, the response is unpredictable and not well understood. Some cell types move towards the positive electrode while others move towards the negative electrode. Understanding this process is important since it is known to play a role in would healing, development, and potentially in metastasis. We are using a microfluidic platform to study the influence of electric field on motility, directionality, shape factor, and cell orientation.
