Rebekka Klausen, of the Dept. of Chemistry at Johns Hopkins University, will present on Wednesday, October 30, 2013, as part of our Fall Seminar Series. The seminar will be held in Maryland Hall 110 at 3:00pm. Graduate students are required to attend. The title and abstract of the seminar is available below.
Molecular Control of Carbon and Silicon Materials
Neighbors on the periodic table, carbon and silicon share aspects of bonding and reactivity, for example, each can adopt a tetrahedral sp3-hybridized configuration that facilitates the formation of chains and rings. While alkanes are insulators, the analogous silanes have promising electronic properties. This seminar will describe initial, fundamental single molecule conductance measurements of silane conductivity as well as steps to move from the realm of the single molecule to materials.
