Graduate Overview

The Department offers three degree options for students wishing to pursue graduate study in Materials Science and Engineering:

• Master of Materials Science and Engineering (M.M.S.E.) Offered through the Engineering and Applied Science Program for Professionals (EPP), the M.M.S.E. is a terminal master’s degree of ten courses usually pursued by students on a part-time basis. Students may enroll in evening classes offered off campus (such as at the Dorsey Center in Elkridge, MD or the Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, MD) as well as in daytime courses on the Homewood Campus.
• Master of Science in Engineering (M.S.E.) The M.S.E. degree is the traditional full-time master’s degree program (although it can also be completed on a part-time basis), with courses offered on the Homewood Campus.
• Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Usually pursued by students interested in careers in research or academia, the Ph.D. is the highest degree offered in our discipline. Both full-time and part-time Ph.D. options are available. Students entering the Ph.D. program without a master’s degree usually fulfill the M.S.E. requirements along the way to completing their Ph.D. degree requirements.

The graduate curriculum is designed to provide students with breadth in the fundamentals of materials science and engineering as well depth in their chosen areas of study. Additional details, including complete descriptions of program requirements, may be found in the catalog.
