Graduate admissions
Costs and Financial Aid

Financial aid is provided only for full-time Ph.D. candidates, typically in the form of research or teaching assistantships. All applicants are automatically considered for financial aid; there is no separate application. Assistantships include:
- Full tuition support (80% tuition remission, with the remaining 20% covered either by the student’s research advisor, or by the department for teaching assistants)
- Stipend for living expenses ($27,200 for the 2009-2010 academic year)
- Individual health insurance
A limited number of fellowships providing either partial or full support are also available.
Specialized Graduate Training Programs
The Institute for NanoBioTechnology has two special graduate education programs available to Ph.D. candidates in Materials Science and Engineering:
- NBMed (Interdisciplinary Graduate Training Program in Nanotechnology for Biology and Medicine)
- NanoBio IGERT (Physical & Biomolecular Foundations for Designing Nanoprobes for Biology)
Other graduate training programs include:
- MCS IGERT (Modeling Complex Systems: A Scientific Approach to Coupling Multi-Physics Models at Different Scales)
External Fellowships
Qualified students are strongly enouraged to apply for external fellowships. These presitigous awards provide significant flexibility in the choice of advisor and research programs. Examples include:
- National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship
- National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship
- Science, Math, and Research for Transformation (SMART)
- Hertz Foundation Applied Science Fellowship
How to apply
Note: Applicants must use the Graduate Education On-Line Application. Paper applications will not be accepted.
The deadlines to apply to the Department of Materials Science and Engineering are:
- October 15, 2009 for the Spring 2010 semester
- January 17, 2010 for the Fall 2010 semester.
A complete graduate application consists of:
- Completed online application (which includes the Statement of Purpose)
- Official transcripts from each college or university attended
- Two letters of recommendation (preferably from faculty members acquainted with you and your academic work)
- Official GRE (general test) scores (no minimum requirement).
Please be sure to use the following GRE codes when requesting to have scores sent to Johns Hopkins University:

Materials Science and Engineering Department code: 1402 - Demonstrated proficiency in English (required for all students whose native language is not English). This may be either:
• TOEFL (JHU Code: 5332, Materials Science and Engineering Department code: 73) or
• IELTS - International English Language Testing System See http://www.grad.jhu.edu/admissions/IELTS.htm - Application fee of $75.00 (automatically waived for U. S. citizens)

All application documents must be provided in English (either the original or translation of the original documents). If you are unable to secure translations in English, we recommend that you contact World Education Services.
