- Two letters of recommendation (preferably from faculty members acquainted with you and your academic work)
-
Official GRE (general test) scores (no minimum requirement).
Please be sure to use the following GRE codes when requesting to have scores sent to Johns Hopkins University:
JHU Code: 5332
Materials Science and Engineering Department code: 1402 -
Demonstrated proficiency in English (required for all students whose native language is not English). This may be either:
• TOEFL (JHU Code: 5332, Materials Science and Engineering Department code: 73) or
• IELTS - International English Language Testing System See http://www.grad.jhu.edu/admissions/IELTS.htm - Application fee of $75.00 (automatically waived for U. S. citizens)

Specialized Graduate Training Programs
The Institute for NanoBioTechnology has two special graduate education programs available to Ph.D. candidates in Materials Science and Engineering:
- NBMed (Interdisciplinary Graduate Training Program in Nanotechnology for Biology and Medicine)
- NanoBio IGERT (Physical & Biomolecular Foundations for Designing Nanoprobes for Biology)
The IGERT in Modeling Complex Systems provides training in scientific approaches to coupling multi-physics models at different scales and can lead to a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering.
Students interested in the IGERT programs should apply directly the Ph.D. program in Materials Science and Engineering and mention their interest in the IGERT programs in their application.
